For the apple i started by drawing a sphere and then converted it to an editable poly. To modify the shape, i used the vertex tool to move the segmented points. I first started with the top and bottom of the apple where i pulled the points inwards. Apples are not perfectly round, so the surface of the shape needed to be modified to create imperfections close to a real apple. For this i randomly selected other groups of segments on the shape and moved them about to get it to a reasonable apple shape. After doing this, i selected the meshsmooth tool from the modifier list which smoothed everything over.
To make the stalk, i created a small cylinder and placed at the top of the apple. Next, converted it into a editable poly, and by extruding and dragging out the shape i was able to make it look close to a stalk.
I have now found there are better ways of making the apple and the stalk which i think i would use if i had to do it again. At least i know them now, so i can use them in the project making.
